A Brief Visit by Faculty of Kagoshima University

December 14, 2009, Sino Memorial: Some members of the Research Center for the Pacific Islands at Kagoshima University led by Professor Shunsuke Nagashima had a brief visit of the Tonoas Sino Memorial School and Community Telecenter on Sunday December 13,2009. The group was greeted and shown around by the Principal of Sino Memorial School. Mr. Harvey Fritz, the Technology Coordinator and Trainer from the Department of Education showed the group the capability of the Telecenter to access resources on the internet including  the website of Kagoshima University. Mr. Fritz further commented that this ICT or technology to the extend can bridge not only  the digital divide but also improve performance of students who have access to this technology.    

Inauguration Ceremony of Sino Memorial Telecenter


November 27, 2009, Sino Memorial: Mayor of Tonoas, the Honorable Tommy Ungeni and Paramount Chief Henry Nedelec welcome the FSM President Emmanual Manny Mori and some members of his cabinet including Secretary of Foreign Affairs and Secretary of Transportation, Communication & Infrastructure and Assistant Secretary of Communication along with a delegation from Japan represented by Japan National Institute of Communication & Technology, Asia Pacific Telecommunity, KDDI Corporation, and Waseda University, FSM Telecom Representative as well as the Honorable Chuuk Governor Wesley W. Simina and Director of Chuuk State Department of Education to Tonoas for the Inaugural Ceremony of the Sino Memorial Telecenter. Keynote address came from the President with acknowledgment of the Japan Delegation and Chuuk Governor; the President stress the importance of caring for the donated computers installed at Sino Memorial School to the leaders and people of Tonoas. He went on to say that the people of Tonoas can now join the gobal community through this Telecenter Project; however, he expressed his regret to learn that some donations from the European Union including solar power equipments were damaged at one of designated Chuuk public school site. The ceremony was held at the Tonoas Municipal Office but demonstration of video and audio conference through internet link to Japan, United States, Kosrae, Pohnpei was at the Sino Memorial site.

Japan-FSM Student Exchange Program

August 5, 2009, Sino Memorial: Students from Japan visit the Island of Tonoas on July 25, 2009 as part of the continuing Japan-FSM Student Exchange Program which started over 25 years ago. Every year during Summer, students from Japan and FSM including Chuuk participated in this program.

The students from Japan had a chance to compete with students of Sino Memorial School in a volleyball match. A memorable moment for all the students who participated in this event.

Project Telecenter Implementation Phase

July 24, 2009, Sino Memorial: Project Telecenter Implementation Phase started in July 4-11, 2009, Experts from KDDI, Japan's second largest telecom a partner with Asia Pacific Telecenter Project, along with selected member of Waseda University master students for Global Information System, start installation of servers at FSM Telecom Headquarter Office, Chuuk Telecom Branch, and Kosrae Telecom Branch. The group are also responsible for the installation of laptop computers at Madolenhimw Elementary Pohnpei, Walung Elementary Kosrae, and Sino Memorial Chuuk. All sites will have internet connectivity through FSM Telecom. This project will allow students, teachers, and community people to have direct access to resources on the internet.
